What better way to kick off a few days without Karl than with the arrival of my new SmallFriend?
(Please excuse my ugly mug in the following few pictures, but there was no good way to do this on webcam and my phone currently doesn’t do pictures. If I look a little disheveled, it’s because I literally just got home from work and the package delivery notification had been sitting in my inbox since noon.)
Oh my god she is absolutely darling and even better than I thought. I admit, my expectations were way lower because I don’t think I’ve ever actually encountered wool-free felt in a handcrafted product before? So I associate felt with always having to pick weird little stray hairs out of whatever you make. Not this baby! It’s very nice, smooth, and soft. Not to mention that it is, indeed, stitched with “scary precision”. These are the kind of tiny, even stitches that I would definitely have needed a sewing machine to even come close to replicating.
So now my tiny stitched friend can hand out with my tiny knitted friend, courtesy of Came By Chance…
(insert obligatory mention that heeey that’s a custom Cole amigurumi, you guys should give Vyc money so you can have one, too…)

What I think is especially cool about this whole mess between Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus, just from my own Googling, is that Nicki is very deliberately calling out the Cult of Nice that has sprung up around a Certain Kind of feminism. Or maybe I should make that “feminism”.
“Nice” is different than “good”.
“Nice” has become a meaningless and even destructive obstacle of a concept. “Nice” is only ever trotted out for shutting down arguments that speak out against the easy status quo, and so “nice” never gets anything done or any change put forth. It’s the embodiment of tone policing, a way for men to put down “crazy wimminz” and for women to say “I’m not like those *~other girls~*”. It’s given us the “Nice Guys”, who are anything but. It’s the same nonsense that’s seeing a backlash against any and all criticisms against 50 Shades of Grey because, well, you can’t criticize E.L James because she’s a woman and we all need to be *~nice~* to each other.
So yeah. The Cult of Nice is a bullshit that Miley Cyrus mistakenly chose to embody (along with her many and varied other problematic elements) and I’m glad Nicki Minaj found herself in a position where she was able as well as willing to give that shit a good smackdown in such a public forum.

She knows that when she wears nasty fake locs, when she evokes mammy stereotypes, that she’s gonna get a reaction. That’s her goal. She’s taking her racism and using to make a profit, to fuel her career, because she’s not talented enough to stay relevant any other way.
She also knows that the media at large is gonna take her side, because she’s white and young and has gotten away with everything in the past.
